Kennel Training A Dog For Beginners

Puppies in many respects are like babies and have to be raised in the manner in which we want them to grow up. Just as a baby should learn to sleep in its own bed, the same principle applies to a puppy. Kennel training a puppy is important to assist with their development and to provide them with a place that is secure for them when necessary.

An important rule in training will be that this is not a place to punish a puppy for bad behavior and it should become a place of safety for them. Required training is necessary, but closing the dog away is not the answer to correcting every bad behavior. This kennel environment should become a place that is both peaceful and restful whenever they need to use it.

Being a consistent owner and one that the dog can depend on is the most valuable asset for training and they will learn much more quickly. When attempting to teach younger dogs not to soil their beds, it will be necessary for them to learn to sleep in them each night. A dog does not want to eliminate where they sleep and this will encourage them to notify you when they need to go out.

Provide soft blankets in the kennel that can be used for them however they choose. Towels are also great for this because they are easy to wash and they will need to be washed many times. Do not give the dog toys at bedtime because it will confuse them. Make it a habit to tell them goodnight or whatever indicator is appropriate for sleep time and they will learn the schedule very fast.

Training will not give the owner much sleep in the first few months and it may seem there is a baby in the house, but it will improve with time. When the dog indicates discomfort remove them, but take them outside without a lot of attention. In no time at all they will develop the pattern between sleep time and play time.

With time and consistency on the part of the owner, the young dog will learn to control its bodily functions much more effectively. After a couple of months, it is likely that they can get through an entire night without having to go out and not soiling their bed. Nothing will be accomplished by scolding the pup for soiling their bed, because it is your responsibility to help them learn to control their urges while they are growing up.

Eventually the kennel will become a place that the dog sees as a resting area that is special and it will not be a place of confinement. It can be used to keep them safe during the night and when it is necessary to leave them alone for a couple of hours. Never restrict a puppy to a kennel for more than a couple of hours because it is important that they learn to have their own private space and it becomes a very special place to them all through.
